Business leaders welcome government’s focus on economy and enterprise

Business leaders have responded to Rachel Reeves’ keynote speech at the Labour Party Conference and hailed the government’s focus on economic growth. Reeves has said her upcoming Budget will be designed to “rebuild Britain” and provided a positive view of the country’s prospects. Shevaun Haviland, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:  ”It was encouraging to hear the Chancellor recognising the huge potential of British business to grow the economy and her ambition to make that happen. This was a vital moment to lift the tone and for the Chancellor to champion the critical importance of economic growth, increased exports and investment.” Responding to Reeves’ speech Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) policy chair, Tina McKenzie, said it was heartening to hear Reeves emphasise “the importance of enterprise clear in her Budget”.

Glasgow Uni to teach environmental impact of digital tech

Students at the University of Glasgow’s School of Computing Science will be the first in the UK to have lessons on the sustainability and environmental impact of digital technologies included in their undergraduate curriculum. The school’s updated curriculum aims to help future generations of computing scientists play leading roles in reducing ecological harms of the digital world. It will focus on understanding and assessing the problem of emissions from computing at a global scale, with a focus on specific systems that students will design and develop. Professor Wim Vanderbauwhede, who created and leads the School of Computing Science’s Low Carbon and Sustainable Computing Group, said: “The ever-increasing complexity of integrated circuits, and the reduction of repairability in favour of planned obsolescence, has outpaced our ability to use every generation of computers in the most energy-efficient ways.
