Downturn in Scottish economy sparks recession fears
Following a period of sustained economic growth, Scotland’s gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 0.3% in the second quarter, with the UK experiencing a 0.2% contraction over the same period. The Office for National Statistics recorded the largest contribution to the decline came from the manufacturing sector, particularly in the food and drink, pharmaceuticals and related industries, contributing more that half of the 0.3% contraction this quarter.

£2m invested in tackling air pollution in Greater Manchester
Two Manchester based research programmes, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Manchester Urban Observatory, are to receive nearly £2 million in government funding to help tackle air pollution. Data from the two sites will allow policy makers to make informed decisions and better understand air pollution in cities.
Scottish Enterprise to create a one-stop shop for business support
According to Scottish Enterprise chief executive Steve Dunlop, Scotland is working towards having a single system for business support. Scottish Enterprise would work more closely with local authorities, Business Gateway, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the emerging economic partnership in the South of Scotland.

$25m investment for Manchester tech firm
AppLearn, a Manchester based global software provider of Digital Adoption Solutions, has announced it has secured $25 million investment by K1 Investment Management, a California based leading investment company focusing on high growth enterprise software companies. The cash injection will allow AppLearn to rapidly expand its global presence and further develop ADOPT, a platform that allows users to maximise return on their digital investments.
